Knowledge and perception of youths about maternal mortality. a case study of Kasulu district in Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2009) Elias, Paschal
Maternal mortality in Tanzania is a major public health problem. It is everywhere in many diverse degrees of complications and is in most cases happening in household and hospital settings. Very little attempts, if any, have been directed to the youth who would be the change agents in their respective societies. The study sought to evaluate knowledge and perception about maternal mortality among the youth in secondary schools, school of nursing and teachers’ colleges. Quantitative survey assessed knowledge on reproductive health and its usefulness in meeting the needs of the youths in the community. The researcher sought to discover whether there were statistical differences in respondents’ knowledge about maternal mortality. The findings show that knowledge on causes of maternal mortality among the youth was well known. Education levels, residence and sex were significantly associated with issues related to maternal mortality. However, age of the respondents was not significantly associated to some aspects but the majority of the respondents perceived significantly the initiatives taken in their societies on how to save mothers from maternal deaths. Thus, the problems of maternal mortality can be successfully achieved by integrating FLE in intervention to address maternal mortality.
