Training and development programs and performance in Tanzanian petroleum industry: a case of Tanzania petroleum development corporation (TPDC)
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2013) Donald, Happy
Trained and developed employees perform their responsibilities with diligence since they are more motivated with the new technology by having new skills and knowledge through their studies compared to non-trained employees who will always seek to quit from the current organization because they are dissatisfied. The study assessed effectiveness of training and development programs in the petroleum industry in Tanzanian, taking Tanzania Development Petroleum Corporation (TPDC) as a case of study. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed in order to obtain the relationship that existed among data groups. Such data were arranged in thematically areas and content analysis was undertaken. Mostly Microsoft Excel was used to process and analyze quantitative data. Findings from the study revealed that there are training and development programmes conducted in TPDC where training needs of employees, training needs of employer, employee working experience, departmental selections, type of training course, availability of training funds, willingness of employees for training, education level of employees, and open performance appraisal are criteria used in selection of employees for training and development programmes. The study showed that Employees’ Training and Development Programs conducted in Tanzanian petroleum industry are effective and bring several benefits to development of the industry in the country. The study also showed that shortage of funds, poor human resource planning and also lack of training facilities affect the training and development programs. The study recommends that TPDC should set aside enough funds to facilitate various training and career development programs in different fields. Finally, Human resource planning, employees motivation and organizational policy concerning training and development programmes should be enhanced so that they can improve performance in the petroleum sector.
