(University of Dar es Salaam, 2007) Demzee, Matilda Martine
Pregnancy and childbirth are natural processs for a woman`s life. It is time of expection and joy for a woman, family and community members as well as , but by no means a woman is at risk free due to pregnancy complications Encouragement for undertaking this study was drawn from a number of factors. There is a rising trend of maternal mortality and disabilities in the country, particularly in rural areas such situation compelled the researcher to conduct this study by addressing socio-cultural factors, which influence prevalence of obstetric fistula in Tanzania. The objective of this study was specifically to investigate socio-cultural factors influencing prevalence of obstetric fistula in Dar es salaam, and to assess public awareness on maternal related risks during pregnancy as well as after delivery associated to obstetric fistula. The cross-sectional type of study was carried out in two public hospitals and one private hospital dealing with disabilities cases. The study was conducted in privacy to guarantee their consent. The interviews involved Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) patients from VVF ward, and exit patients from antenatal clinics using structured and unstructured interview schedules. A total of 100respondents were interviewed from different categories within the hospitals. The study identified some cultural practices that are still prevailing in some parts of Tanzania. These included early marriage, women`s status on decision-making, food taboos and other superstitions as well as traditions. Another important in regard to perceptions of obstetric fistula, whereby VVF patients seemed to be stigmatized and hid themselves inside, which demoralized their self esteem. This affected their economic activities.
