Item Social and economic aspects of Bandek land settlement scheme.(University of East Africa, 1968) Cosnow, Jeffrey E.The thesis will consist of a sociological case study of a land settlement scheme located in Kericho District in the Republic of Kenya. The topics which are given the greatest consideration are the social factors effecting agricultural production, the problem of agricultural production despite settlement, the Co-operative Society and loan repayments. The thesis states that agricultural production on the Scheme is strikingly grater than it is on the neighboring freehold lands, but that the per acre production is considerably below that achieved by the Europeans that formerly occupied the Land. The explanation given for this phenomenon is that the plot holders are committed to producing for the cash economy to a much greater degree than are the people in the neighboring freehold land, but they are not completely committed to the concept of farming as a commercial enterprise. The “economizing ethnic” is not at the centre of the plot holders’ attitude toward farming. This contention will be supported by data collected in interviews and by observation. A discussion of the agricultural techniques practiced by the plot holders will be presented. The thesis concludes that despite the fact that many of the plot holders find certain aspects of the Scheme unpleasant, only a small minority of them have chosen to sell their plots and move elsewhere. The great majority of the plot holders consider the scheme to be their permanent home.
