Contribution of private coffee plantations to community livelihoods: a case of Kilimanjaro Coffee Plantation in Mosh Rural District, Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2018) Chuwa, Laurian W
This study was carried out at the Kilimanjaro Coffee Plantation Limited (KCPL) at Kitandu and Shinga villages in Moshi Rural District. A cross-sectional research design involving purpose and random sampling was used in selecting villages and households respectively. Literature review, participatory rural appraisal including Focus Group Discussion, key informant interviews, household interviews and field observations were used for data collection. It was observed that the presence of private investors in the communal land has changed the living standards of the people around the plantation fruitfully than when the land was not yet privatized. This privatization has enlarged the income base of the community. The contribution of private coffee plantations to the community livelihoods was found to be significant between private coffee plantation investments and consequently incomes and job opportunities increased to the communities around. However, the analysis has portrayed a decreasing trend in food production. It can be concluded that although the involvement of private coffee plantations has had remarkable income increase to households and community compared to when the land was under the community, there are still some challenges including declining cropland that may lead to future food insecurity. Therefore, this study suggest that issues of reserving land for food crops should be taken seriously as not all the community members are employed in the plantation, hence they need to produce food crop production in order to address the problem of food shortage, instead of switching the whole land to cash crop production.
