Factors contributing to students’ tendency to drop french subject at azania and zanaki secondary schools, Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam,, 2017) Christian, Adventina
This study determined potential factors contributing to students’ tendency to drop French subject. The study based on three specific objectives: To examine the rate of student’s dropout in French subject, to map out the causes for students to dropout the French subject and to determine teachers’ and students’ opinion on the strategies for minimizing the rate of students to dropout in the French subject. The study employed qualitative research approach using a multiple-case study design. The target population comprised of French teachers and students, academic masters and heads of school in two schools at Azania and Zanaki secondary schools in Dar es Salaam. This study used both convenient and purposeful sampling techniques to draw research sample from a defined small population from the two schools taking French subject. These schools not only that they are few but also contain very few students taking the subject (often not more than 100 per school). Data was collected using open-ended questionnaires, document review and interview. The collected information was analysed using content analysis. In examining the rate of students dropout the finding indicated that, not all students who initially enrolled in the French subject in two schools sat for final examination. Thus, there were high rate drop outs in French subject compared to other subjects. Also there were decreasing trends for students to sit for final national French subject examination. Basically, in maping out the causes for students to dropout the French subject the study found various reasons such as poor teaching techniques, lack of teaching and learning materials, making the subject among optional subjects and having few periods in the school time table which have encouraged negative attitude among the students hence dropout from the subject. Based on teachers’ and students’ opinion on the strategies for minimising the rate of students to dropout in the French subject, it was concluded that there was need of encouraging favourable environment needed for T\L French, teachers should be closer to students taking French subject and lastly, the government should collaborate with France Embassy to work on improving the teaching of the subject and inspiring French language competitions as a means to encourage others to learn this subject.
