Factors affecting the choice of University College to attend among undergraduate students in Zambia
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2009) Chilengi, Lucia Chilukutu
The main objective of this study was to investigate the Factors that influence University College Choice among undergraduate students in Zambia.’ In order to establish assertion, four latent variables were used in the study. These latent variables include; the number of potential students who apply for school places, the chance of securing academic sponsorship, the quality of lecturers and the rigor of academic programme. In order to establish the factors that affect University college choice among undergraduate students, a sample size of 150 students from four University Colleges located in four different cities was established and data was collected using questionnaires. The results were analyzed using Chi-square and multiple regressions in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The research findings show that there is a significant relationship between the choice of University College to attend and the number of potential students who apply for school places, the chance of securing academic sponsorship, the quality of lectures and the rigor of academic programme. The results therefore suggest that the providers of higher education need to find ways of ensuring more students are enrolled in University Colleges by offering academic programmes to the less qualified prospective students for the attainment of certificates and diplomas. The quality of lecturers should also be promoted, with a high dosage of learning materials. Modalities should also be put in place by policy makers to enable a larger number of students to obtain academic sponsorships. Academicians can also pursue studies aimed at discovering other factors that affect University College choice, apart from what has already been investigated in this study.
