    Psychosocial barriers to parent-youth communication on HIV/AIDS prevention and reproductive health: a case study of magugu community, Babati, Manyara region

    The study examined psychosocial barriers to parent youth communication on reproductive health information in Magugu community. Specifically, the study explored gender, cultural;, and cognitive related barriers to parent youth communication in Magugu community. This study was conceptualized within the framework of Bronfenbrenner`s Ecological Systems. Theory (1979) and McGuire Communication Theory (1985). A cross sectional survey was carried out in the Magugu Community, Manyara region in Northen Tanzania. A total of 240 youth and parents in the age range of 10-24 years and above, respectively were randomly selected from four villages of the Magugu community. Data were collected through structured self-administered questionnaires and were analysed using SPSS for windows version 11.0. Chi-Square test was employed to test significant relationship for each hypothesis at 0.01 level. Spearman’s rank Correlation Coefficient (rho) was used to measure magnitude and direction of correlation between gender, cultural cognitive related barriers to communicate other sensitive components of reproductive health. The main gender related barriers were parents` shame to talk on reproduction matters, and female parents` low formal education. The main cultural related barriers were taboo, inadequate knowledge about HIV/AIDS prevention methods and reproductive health information. The findings implied that, the reported barriers should be eradicated the reported barriers, this study recommended that training on communication skills, HIV/AIDS prevention methods and reproductive health. Also counseling services about skills to eradicate taboo, shame, and inadequate youth`s socialization in families, should be provided to parents.
