    Impact of foreign direct investment inflows on the performance of local tour operators in Tanzania

    The purpose of this research was to estimate the impact of Foreign Direct Investment inflows in tourism sector on the performance of local tour operators in Tanzania. Methodology and approach used was descriptive research through systematic sampling as a technique focusing only on local tour operators in Arusha and Moshi. Data were collected through questionnaires from sampled population of 100 respondents. Content method for data analysis used descriptive analysis and results were presented in form of simple frequency tables and text for easy of interpretation. Findings from the research showed that local tour operators in Tanzania have no muscles to compete with the giant foreign direct investors. Therefore they experience poor performance in sales, market share and profit. The Government through Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism need to have an Agency that will perform the role with direct involvement of local tour operators just like what TANTRADE does to SMEs in Tanzania. Merge business license and reduce the registration fee for local tour operators. It should specify areas for investment in tourism supply chain which cannot be run by indigenous and make joint venture a pre requisite for foreign direct investment inflows on the tourism sector. This study aimed at contributing to the body of knowledge on the impact of Foreign Direct Investment inflows in tourism sector on the performance of local tour operators in Tanzania.
