    Solid waste management practices, strategies and challenges: the case study of Kinondoni Municipality, Dar es Salaam

    The purpose of the study was to explore challenges of solid waste management practices in Kinondoni Municipality and recommend strategies for future initiatives which may be used to handle, collect, store and get rid of SW Rapid population growth in our urban centers resulted to unplanned settlement, the inadequate SWM include pollution of surface and ground water, open dump of garbage hence excessive amounts of solid waste which facilitate the breeding of diseases vectors such as flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, rats, all poses serious environmental and public health risks. Presently KM has about 1,775,049 million inhabitants with daily solid waste generation of 2026 tons where by only 823 tons which is 41% being collected and transported to dumpsite per day and 1203 tons being left in streets without collecting hence 36,090 tons a month. The methodology used to collect data includes observation, site visiting, literature reviews and interview guide with key informants. The study target income areas of high, low, middle as well as per urban and industrial zone using local authority leaders since they are people’s representatives. Data collected were coded and analyzed using Microsoft Excel. Main challenges analyzed include inadequate finance to SWM sector, poor infrastructure and technology used for disposing, collection and transportation, lack of public awareness on good sanitary practices, inadequate legal and regulatory on SWM, long distance to the only dumpsite at Pugu Kinyamwezi as well little involvement of stakeholders towards ISWM. The study findings revealed the current rate of environmental deterioration is likely to persist unless a long term remedial measures such as policy changes, tax polluter payers and law enforcement among others are put into practices.
