Item Shifting cultivation in developing agriculture(Fosbrooke, 1973) Braun, HThe motivation for the development of agriculture in general is the same as for the improvement of shifting cultivation to meet the food requirements of e. growing populations and to increase agricultural productivity for the betterment of the socio-economic status of rural populations as well as of the national economy. The change to a more intensive farming system calls for careful and thorough, planning and preparations and -greatly increased services rendered to the farmer. The reasons and the needs for an improvement or change of the .System are complex and of various degrees. The problem to find new ways might be less urgent in the forest zone due to the prevailing favorable climatic conditions which act less destructive on the soil fertility factors. Perhaps land is also still available to a greater extent than in other climatic zones. In the Savannah zone, on the other hand, fallow periods are in certain regions not existing any more or are that far reduced that they have little or no effect on the regeneration of soils. Consequently, action might be required in the first instance in the Savannah zone leaving possibly some more time for the appropriate preparatory work in the forest zone.
