Item Strategies for development of small and medium enterprises in Tanzania a case of metal products organization(University of Dar es Salaam, 2010) Bimbiga, Charlo PauloThe aim of this study was to explore the impact of Export Processing Zones on the Economic performance of Tanzania by looking at the extent to which it has achieved its predetermined goals and objectives. The study involved interviews with 14 respondents who were purposively selected from the firms operating under the Tanzania's EPZ sites. Further, secondary data were obtained from the Export Processing Zones Authority of Tanzania. Findings show that (75%) rank the EPZprogramme as having met expectations in terms of relevance of its objectives; while 25% of responses consider the programmer objectives as irrelevant. Further findings show that 60 responses (53.6 percent) view the objectives as not having been implemented efficiently. The study further found out that the textile industry employs 85 percent of the entire EPZ workforce followed by the agro processing sector which employs 7 percent. The rate of employment was found to be on the increase though at a decreasing rate. Furthermore, the study found out that the EPZ firms have small but satisfactory contribution to the national exports as the percentage has been on the increase. The researcher concludes that the EPZ sector is crucial in addressing some economic challenges hence the programmer need to be strengthened in the sense that the basic needs for the programme should be addressed. These include improvement of the EPZ infrastructure, including reliable and affordable power supply, water and sanitary services, transport and communication infrastructure as well as storage facilities. The researcher recommends that the textile sector be strengthened as it employs 85 percent of the labour force in the EPZ sector. However efforts should be done to boost other sectors which are labour intensive so as to employ more labour in the sector. Technology intensive sectors should also be strengthened in order to intensify technology transfer.
