    Teachers, students and parents' attitudes towards teaching condom use against hiv/aids pandemic in morogoro: a study of primary schools in rural and urban districts

    The purpose of the study was to get an in-depth understanding of the teachers, students and parents' attitudes towards teaching condom use. Specific objectives were to investigate how teachers taught condom use in HIV/AIDS prevention; to investigate teachers, students and parents' attitudes towards teaching condom use, and to assess problems teachers faced in teaching condom use. The study was conducted among four schaols in Morogoro rural and urban districts with 152 respondents. Ideas adapted flom Parlet and Hamilton (1987) was used to in the conceptual Framework to guide the study. The study adopted a survey design in data collection. Sampling techniques including random and purposive sampling procedures were employed to obtain data for this study. The study employed quantitative and qualitative research approaches. It used quesdonnains, interviews, documentary search and observation methods. Quantitative data were coded for analysis using SPSS while qualitative data were subjected to content analysis. With regard to findings, it was revealed that condom use was not properly taught in primary schools. Findings also revealed that teachers, students and most parents had positive attitudes towards teaching condom use. Nevertheless in the course of implementing that, some constraints were identified. The problems included lack of confidence, religious beliefs, lack of training amongst teachers and some parents' resistance. It is recommended that firstly, condom use should be seriously taught in primary schools to protect students who are sexually active. Secondly, the study recommended dialogue and open discussion that incorporate parents, children, leaders and community members on how to publicize the use of condoms. Also, The Ministry of Education and national Training should establish mechanisms to ensue in-serviw training to I order to improve pedagogical aspect related ta to the teaching of condom use.
