Towards proper management of the Saadani cultural heritage resources
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2013) Bigambo, Richard
Saadani village is among few places in Tanzania that are abound with both natural and cultural attractions. Despite this richness, cultural attractions in Saadani have been left unattended. Very limited efforts have been directed towards documenting or managing them, hence deterioration has been continuing over time which affects the assets, causing them to lose their original appearance and integrity. Following the failure of attending to these assets, this study attempts to document the neglected cultural heritage assets of Saadani village, and prepare a management plan for their development. In doing so, the study had four specific objectives which were: (a) to identify and document cultural heritage assets found at the village; (b) to assess public awareness and perception towards cultural heritage assets at Saadani village; (c) to study and determine its tourism potentials and (d) to prepare a management plan for heritage resources at the village. Observation, interview and literature reviews have led to identification and documentation of nine (9) heritage assets found at Saadani and nearby villages. The study managed to assess their touristic potential as well as establishing conservation measures required for them, at the same time ensuring that tourism does not become detrimental to them. Furthermore, the study has identified people’s awareness concerning the importance of these assets. Likewise, the recommendations have been given for improving people’s understanding on the importance of these assets and the ways in which people can benefit from tourism of the area. Lastly the study presents a draft management plan model for maintenance of Saadani and similar sites elsewhere.
