    Assessment of employee training practices in Tanzania public work organizations: the case of Kinondoni municipality

    The aim of this study is to investigate in detail the employee training practices in Tanzania public organizations. Employee training is essential in public organizations as it is one of the main ways of raising skill levels of the workforce. Mainly qualitative data were collected, comprising of explanations, views and opinions from the respondents. The qualitative data collected from interviews, questionnaires and documentary review were tabulated and subjected to content analysis. Different computer programs were applied, such as statistical package for social science (SPSS), software assisted to compute percentages, tabulation and cross-tabulation of responses.The study entailed to investigate whether the criteria used in selecting employees for training is adhered to human resource (HR) practices, to examine how decisions regarding employee training in public organizations are made. Furthermore, the study examined the usefulness of training program in public organizations.The study reveals that, organizations are required to carry out training needs assessment and use it for selecting candidates for training. However, open performance appraisal (OPA) should be used as one of the criteria designed for sending employees to attend training. The study also reveals the benefits obtained from training such as improved work performance at organizational level, increased knowledge and skills, promotion as well as increased earnings at individual employee level.
