Development of rice husk gasifier stove for domestic purposes
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2011) Barnaba, Elisante
Rice husks residues have historically been regarded as worthless wastes, disposed off by being burnt directly onsite, or occasions flushed away into rivers, resulting into either air or water local pollution. Desk Research was conducted and a rice husks gasifier stove has been developed which meets both technical and socio-economic criteria and brings environmental benefit as an alternative way of utilizing rice husks as a source of energy Laboratory performance testing of the developed stove showed that a reactor accommodating 1.2 kg of rice husks at full load was easily ignited within two minutes and raised 2.5 litres of water from room temperature (about 29 °C) to local boil temperature (98 °C) within 12 min and sustained boiling for 45 min of continuous operation. No emission of smoke and foul odour was observed during the test. The computed fuel consumption rate of the stove was about 34 gmin-1 and specific gasification rate was around 1 15 kgm-2 h-1. Firepower output of the stove was around 3250 Watts, and an average thermal efficiency of 36 % which is higher than the thermal efficiency of the traditional metal stove which is 22.7 % and it is within the range of the thermal efficiency of the conventional improved stove which ranges from 24 to 42 %. The emissions for carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and methane (CH4) were analyzed by using a Testo series.175- 177 Data Logger and the results showed average concentration of these gases in the chimney was 219 mg/m3, 266 mg/m3, 2.15 mg/m3 and 10 mg/m3 respectively. The gasifier stove competes with other stoves which utilize wood-fuel and charcoal, hence its use will turn rice husks to energy.
