Analysis of parameters affecting voice quality in GSM technology: a case study of Airtel Tanzania Limited in Dar es Salaam Municipalities
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2013) Banyenza, Stella Kokwenda
The introduction of mobile phones communication as a result of advancement in technology has made it relatively easy for people to communicate from one point to another. However, in recent years one of the main problems in the networks has been poor quality of speech during communication. In this research the main problem which has been under investigation arises from the fact that in most cases mobile phone users experience difficulty in conversation in terms of clarity of voice, background noise, mismatched speech levels and acoustic echo. The parameters affecting voice quality in GSM technology have been identified and analysed. The study was conducted by going through various literatures, studying the models of analyzing quality of voice, practical measurement of the quality of voice in GSM technology through drive tests. The study has been done using Airtel Tanzania Ltd network as case study in all three municipalities of Dar es salaam city in order to collect enough data for analysis. The analysis of the collected data represented the average performance of a network in terms of quality of speech. Data analysis was performed using MATLAB software culminating to the development of a voice quality mathematical model. The study has contributed to the knowledge by identifying, and quantifying the parameters affecting voice quality in GSM network. The developed quantitative mathematical model that integrates the identified parameters is the main contribution in this study. The findings in the analysis, which were revealed in the developed mathematical model indicated that the most critical parameters which affect voice quality, in the descending order, are Bit Error Rate (BER), which determines Received signal strength (Rxqual) followed by Received Signal level RxLevel) and carrier to Interference (C/i) ratio. The study has recommended that by using the Voice Quality model. Airtel (t) Limited will be in the position to predict the voice quality, and exploring more parameters which could have effect on voice quality and hence Quality of Service.
