Factors influencing academic performance of students with visual impairment in primary schools in Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2005) Bangula, Ayub Ramadhan
The aim of the present study was to investigate the factors which influence the academic performance of students with visual impairment in primary school classrooms in Tanzania. It was found out that the shortage of braille text books and special equipment highly affected the academic performance of students with visual impairment. The shortage accelerated the poor academic performance of students with visual impairment. Five different data collection techniques were employed to collect both primary and secondary data. They included documentary review, questionnaires, interviews, observations and checklist. Consistent with the findings, the following recommendations are made for the government and teachers: 1. The government should allocate sufficient funds for schools of children with disabilities in general and particularly those with visual imperilment, so as to improve their teaching-learning materials.2. Teachers should prepare teaching-learning materials using locally available materials from their environment. They should not depend on everything from the government. 3. The government should train many specialist teachers in order to alleviate the shortage of teachers, in both integrated and special schools, 4. The government make sure that through her Braille Printing Press, it produces enough Braille text books and distribute them to the respective schools 5. The government should distribute enough special equipment to the integrated and special schools.6. The government should conducted seminars and workshop on special education for both specialists and non-specialist teachers in primary schools.7. The government should also allocate enough fund for running the Tanzania braille printing press. .
