Effectiveness of training of trainers (TOT) programmes entrepreneurship development for University lectures: a case of University of Dar es Salaam
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2005) Bange, Gracemary
This study sought to assess the adoption of teaching methods suggested in trainer training courses on entrepreneurship development, the reasons for differences in their adoption among lecturers and their perceived effect on students' enterprising behaviour at the University of Dar es Salaam. A combination of quantitative (survey) and qualitative (interview) approaches were used. The study found out that, entrepreneurship TOT to the lecturers have the intended effect on lecturer’s approach to teaching and students' entrepreneurial behaviour. Differences in adoption are explained mainly by the constraints faced by lecturers that hinder full utilization of teaching-learning methods learnt in the course. This also explains the slow pace of change in attitude and behaviour of students. The main obstacles to the use of the teaching-learning methods are: consequences of declining resources and increased student numbers and difficulties this place on teaching-learning methods like hindrance of students' access to adequate learning resources and the increased assessment workloads to the lecturers. It is recommended that, the University, Government, and training institutions make stronger efforts to create suitable solutions to obstacles that block practicability and full utilization of the potentials that, entrepreneurship development TOT courses for lecturers at UDEC offers.
