Risk factors associated with cholera outbreaks recurrence in Ilala municipality
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2006) Bagoka, Rosemary
The purpose of this study was to determine risk factors associated with the recurrence of cholera outbreaks in Ilala Municipality. Quantitative approaches were used through structured interviews as well as observing the environments surrounding the affected area, by using a checklist. This study found that, almost all respondents (99.6%) had good knowledge about the disease and majority (97.3%) obtains water from safe sources. Only a half of people from Buguruni drink boiled water. . The fact that some respondents did not have toilets may promote the poor mechanism of excreta disposal that was noted among some respondents (23%). More than a third (38.5%) of respondents washed hands in common container prior eating. It was found that more than a quarter (29.8%) of respondents did not wash hands always when were from the toilet majority being from Buguruni. Major conclusions reached are that; household members have sufficient knowledge on cholera, its causes, transmission and effects and prevention mechanism, however, they do not put this knowledge into practice The study recommends household’s members to put their knowledge into practices as well as control of Social cultural practices that expose individuals to cholera disease. There is a need for future research to examine in detail why the households behave the way they do. A detailed effect of impact of water vending to the cholera recurrence would also add value in the existing knowledge.
