Item Drivers of success for food processing firms in Tanzania(University of Dar es Salaam, 2013) Augustine, Alice SakiThe study aimed at identifying drivers of success for food processing firms in Tanzania. Specifically, the study focused on firms’ strategies, capabilities and impacts of managers’ demographic characteristics on the success of food processing firms. The study was conducted in three regions; Dar es Salaam, Iringa and Dodoma. It involved a total of 34 food processing firms. Data were collected using guide interview, questionnaires and literature review. Data were analyzed by using logistic regression, descriptive statistics and content analysis for qualitative data.The findings show that managers/owners’ age, managers’ education level, managers’ experiences; on time delivery, research and development, human resources’ capabilities have a positive relationship with the success of food processing firms in Tanzania. The study presents that quality strategy, product design, financial capability (expertise) and coordination (networking) capability have no impacts to the success of food processing firms in Tanzania. Equally, respondents agreed that updating equipment and technology is very important though most of the surveyed firms have failed to acquire and use modern machines due to lack of funds. It was evident that most of the surveyed firms have abandoned networking approach in reducing business risks and uncertainties. The study recommends to food processing firms to improve quality of the food products. It also recommends for proper policy interventions in terms of investments in research and development for knowledge extensions. The study also recommends that government should ensure improvement of infrastructure and improve access of information. In addition food processing firms are advised to be proactive in commercializing and marketing their products in local and international market.
