An assessment of the role of indigenous food preservation in the adaptation to the impact of climate change in Urambo district, Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2017) Andrew, Augustino
In this study the researcher investigated the website usage in higher learning institutions for information communication using the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). The aim was to explore the types of information posted on the websites, its accessibility as well as its constraints. The study involved six units chosen on the basis of their differential accessibility of information from UDSM’s website(s). A qualitative research approach was used involving a case study design which adopted questionnaires, interviews and observations to collect data from 109 participants who were purposively sampled in six units of the university. Thematic data analysis was deployed and the findings from the study showed that the types of information posted on university main website focused mainly on academic information, administrative information as well as news and announcements. While main website (www.udsm.ac.tz) and ARIS website (www.aris2.udsm.ac.tz) are the more accessible websites by the university community. The constraints that were mentioned included insufficient bandwidth, old information, link down and insufficient information as well as lack of training to unit webmasters. From the objectives of the study, it was concluded that the university websites posted with various information will positively influence accessing of these sites but the constraints impinge on the value of its accessibility and so they fail to provide effective and reliable communication. It is recommended that there is a need to improve the posted information, establishment of affiliation with well known universities, recruit information officer at every unit level, modify infrastructures, ensure reliable power supply by providing alternative sources of electric power supply and provide regular training of webmasters by providing enough funds to units’ IT departments.
