Assessment of women participation in community development projects: the case of TASAF supported Water Projects in Kibaha Rural District
(University of Dar es salaam, 2012) Amigo, Fredrick O.
The study aimed to assess participation of women in the TASAF supported water projects, with a focus on rural areas. The study linked women participation in water projects with the convenience, effectiveness and sustainability of such projects. Two villages in Kibaha district were used as a case study. Issues examined in the study included how women participated in the water projects, factors which affected women participation in the projects and the contribution of their participation to the success of those projects. Data collection techniques included interviews, questionnaires, reference books and physical observations. Literature review was also undertaken to see how women should participate in water projects and the outcome of their participation in water projects. The study found out that participation of women in water projects contributes to projects effectiveness, convenience and sustainability when elements of such outcomes were considered at the initial stages of the project. Such elements include project friendliness to women, women’s say and control over the projects. Proper capacity building to women on water management and effective inclusion of women in water committees were also found to be significant factors in relation to women participation in water projects. Finally, a conclusion was made that the participation of women in the projects was minimal especially in form ideas contribution. However, that participation did play a role to the success of the projects in some way. Recommendations were also given for instance, it was recommended that women should do away with the notion that men are the ones who can best participate in water projects and that women learn about projects and project activities through the men.
