The research questions addressed the extent at which motivation is influenced by performance management in SAUT. The primary source of data comprised both open and close-ended questionnaires covering 60 respondents (i.e. academic staff, administrative staff and operational staff of SAUT- Malimbe campus). These primary sources were complemented with relevant secondary documents from previous dissertations, journals, reports etc. Data was analyzed using qualitative method which was done interpretatively with the guide of research questions. Both data from open and closed questionnaires were subjected to content analysis in order to give clear information and make it easy for the researcher to interpret and understand the findings. The analysis showed that although there is a performance management system in SAUT but currently is not very effective. The results also indicated that the concept of performance management is not well understood among SAUT’s community. Many of them regarded performance appraisal as performance management. It should be understood that performance appraisal is just a part within performance management. Employees also claimed that there is favoritism in SAUT, no freedom of speech, there is unfair performance rating and unfair remuneration too. All these, de-motivate employees in performing better. The research however has generated meaningful insight that SAUT and other organizations in general can use efficiently performance management system in the motivation of their employees. It therefore recommends among others creating a clear written performance management system system, Head of Departments should avoid being biased to employees whom the employer likes, training for all the managers must be conducted to give them a good idea on what is performance management and how to conduct it,communication is must between managers and employees and among employees themselves and the employees should be rewarded with incentives that will be consummerate with their efforts.
