Analysis of sanitation information management systems in Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2013) Ally, Rukia
Due to limited sanitation information and lack of harmonized system to monitor sanitation and hygiene in Tanzania, it was paramount for this study to analyze how sanitation information is currently managed in Tanzania specifically in the aspects of how information is obtained, the weakness of available sanitation information, storage and the present challenges of monitoring and evaluation of sanitation in Tanzania in both public and non governmental institutions. A qualitative research was used to capture information through literature reviews and oral interviews with sanitation key informants in studied organizations. The findings show that, there are different organizations in the sanitation sector for different purposes, with varying ways for managing sanitation information. The study found out that 38 % of institutions make use of MIS in managing information where international organizations are 33%, among tools that are used by these organizations in data collection were questionnaires by 25%. Geographical information systems tools used is geographical positioning (GPS) by 10%. Also the findings show obstacles in the organizations including recording different information, no harmonized system to manage information of the sector countrywide, nongovernmental organizations and development partners depend more on public institutions to obtain primary information to understand sanitation status before implementing projects. Unfortunately public institutions experience challenges which hinder sector monitoring. Hence this study came up with conceptual Sanitation information management system for public institutions which incorporates GIS platform with more appropriate information and linkage with other stakeholders.
