Illicit drugs use and related criminal behaviors in Zanzibar: an application of Multivariate analysis.
(University of Dar es Salaam,, 2012) Ali, Salum Kassim
The study was conducted among inmates in the rehabilitation centers at Urban West Region; and sought to determine the factors which influence substance abuse and whether substance abuse has direct relationship to the criminal behaviors. A pre-designed questionnaire was administered in this cross-sectional study in a sample of 426 inmates. The data on responses of inmates to factor influence and the substance abuse were analyzed using factor analysis and a clear interpretable factor structure emerged for each set of questions labelled placed. Similarly, based on responses of inmates to practice questions, five factors were emerged. The standardized factor scores of inmates for each of these five factors were computed and were used in further analyses. The common predictors in the Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) and Ordinal Logistic Regression (OLR) for factors score (R2=35.0°A, p<0.001, F=45.2), involvement in violent crime, (R2=36.5%, p<0.001, F=48.3), involvement in property crime and (R2=29.6%, p<0.001, F=35.4) involvement in other crime, both are the predictors for criminal behavior. The findings are that, there are factors which influence substance abuse which related to criminal behaviors on violent crimes, property crime and other criminals' behaviors. From the study it is recommended that the study be replicated to compare variances among inmates from different regions and sober houses.
