    Luo expansion and its implications on the sub communities in the Rorya District 1850-2000

    The principal arguments in this dissertation is that ‘’Luo expansion in rorya district for the past one and a half centuries has had a tremendous influence on the indigenous Suba communities.’’ The most visible domains of the above influence include change in territorial setting language shift and changes in certain sociocultural values e.g. removal of six ;lower teeth as well as the adoption of Luo names, identity, music and burial rites (teng’o). The stated Luo influence over Suba people has been facilitated by a number of mechanisms. The most pervasive ones include warfare, intermarriage and colonial policies. The influence is, however, not uniformly distributed over all Suba communities. In the district. Rather, it can be seen at five different levels: extremely high i.e. Barien, high (i.e Bakine from Nyamagaro; Irienyi/Simbiti from Kisumwa and Nyathorogo from Nyamagaro) and none (i.e Irienyi/Simbiti from much of Suba. The chapter one gives an overview of the research problem, specific objectives, research questions theoretical framework, and literature review and research methodology). Just briefly, it is worth noting that the study employs Brtonislaw Malinowski`s theory of ``culture contact.
