The study of storage required to augment low flow with reference to Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 1992) Ajayi, Jimoh Joseph
A regional reservoir capacity estimation distribution model has been developed based on the concept of mass curve and within-year storage analysis which is collectively referred to as the behaviour analysis method. The procedure helps to eliminate some of the limitations associated with the popular mass curve analysis for preliminary screening or reservoir siting. The distribution was used to produce the regional storage-yield return period curve (SYR) model useable at both gauged and ungauged sites in Tanzania. All the SYR curves at the six yield levels considered showed a general qualitative, similarity of linearity. Forty one stations at-site data were used in the calibration process of the distribution model to determine its efficient application on the individual stations. The result showed that higher percentage of the stations selected for calibration are well fitted at low return periods. To be able to use this model for ungauged sites, linear regression analysis of the catchment area (CAT) with the mean annual flow (AMAF), mean annual maximum storage (MAX) and the catchment deficiency (CAD) were conducted. The result shows that efficient information can be transferred for catchment areas in the range of 1, 000 to 100,000 km2. The limitations of this study are highlighted and recommendations for further studies and updating of the developed model are suggested.
