The role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in promoting good governance in Tanzania: a case study of four selected NGOs in Dar es Salaam region
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2009) Ahungu, Lyima Brenda
This thesis investigates the role of non- governmental organizations (NGOs) in promoting good governance, taking into consideration their growth. NGOs act as watchdog role advocacy and lobbying as well as service provision role to the marginalized citizens. It is argued that NGOs have potential role in promoting good governance for sustainable economic, social and cultural development. The problem is on how NGOs could come with constructive and effective strategies in enhancing good governance. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of NGOs in their efforts towards promoting good governance. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam region, and data collection was based on both quantitative and qualitative data, with the focus of case study in four selected NGOs. The major findings was that NGOs in Tanzania have succeeded to play their role. The challenge is on how NGOs could come with contractive and effective strategies in enhancing their role in promoting good governance and be perceived as reliable stakeholder in that role by the government. The study also revealed that advocacy and lobbying were the main strategies used by most NGOs to advance their agenda and bring about media, public and civil servants’ attention on the issues raised. The study found that although NGOs had played a potential role towards goods governance promotion in Dar es salaam, where was still much to be done on the side of the NGOs internal governance, and their tactics in advancing good governance agenda. They also need to build a strong citizen base and wider constituency for them to be treated seriously by the state. On the other hand, the government should open up more and provide space and full autonomy to NGOs to enable them to perform their activities without fear or intervention by the state and organs.
