The suitability of horizantal flow roughing filtration as a sole treatment plants
(University of Dar es Salaam, 1990) Adegboyega, Olusegun Ajani
Contaminated surface water constitutes the only source of water for most of the rural dwellers in many developing countries especially Africa. Treatment of this water is often necessary in order to make it safe for human consumption. Various research carried out in different parts of the world where slow sand filters failed to cope with raw waters of high turbidity revealed that horizontal flow roughing filters can be applied as pretreatment step prior slow sand filtration, in order to cope with surface waters with high turbidities. However, the use of the horizontal-flow roughing filters simultaneously with slow sand filtration may not be possible in some rural water supply schemes because of the high construction costs involved. Hence, there is a need to carry out a research into the suitability of applying horizontal-flow roughing filter as a sole treatment process for rural water supply schemes. Field investigations were carried out by using a horizontal-flow roughing filter pilot plant constructed at Wanging'ombe water treatment plant site located at Mbukwa in Njombe district, Iringa Region, Tanzania. Among the water quality parameters investigated, it was found that the removal efficiency for turbidity, apparent colour and faecal coliform were 95, 80 and 79%, respectively. The results proved that horizontal-flow roughing filters can be applied as a sole treatment process for rural water supply schemes if the raw water source is moderately polluted and has little amounts of settieable suspended matter.
