The impacts of globalization on the working class in Tanzania: some reflections From Tanzania Electricity Supplies Company and Tanzania Telecommunication Company (TANESCO & TTCL)
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2005) Adam, Daud
This study sought to investigate the deleterious effects and implications of the process of globalisation on the working class of Tanzania, particularly its implications to the Tanzanian workers. It was conducted in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania where the headquarters of both the Tanzania electric supplies limited (TANESCO) AND Tanzania telecommunications limited (TTCL) are located. Several variables were used in this study to elucidate the impacts of globolisation on the workers. The key variables that were used include the employment trends, both before and after the information of privatization measures; number of workers who had been declared redundant following the introduction of the privatisation processes; the nature and characteristics of new jobs created; the impacts on the roles, functions, conditions of trade unions and its implications to the industrial relation system and practices. The overall observation of this study indicates that, globolisation as attested by privatisation of hitherto public/state owned and controlled enterprises/corporations has caused the decapitation of the working class in the country through measures like retrenchment, payment of very small, “bachelor” wages and recent enactment of labour laws which seen to provide very little protection to workers. Furthermore, the process has led to decline in employment growth and rapid decline of standard of living of workers and their families which have emerged to be a common phenomenon. The process mentioned above also had negative impacts as regards the roles and functions of trade unions as well as the emerging system and practice of industrial relations in the country. In conclusion the author recommends further and more comprehensive research on the subject under study and other general related aspects.
