    Analysis of constrains of exportation of forestry products

    This study analyzed the main constrains to the exportation of forestry products from Tanzania. The study deployed a regression analysis in which forestry products export is assumed to be determined by the price in the world market, export of raw timber and logs, timber and logs collection and infrastructural costs associated with forestry products trade. The model establishing the link between named variables and volume of export covered the period of 1978-2008 was formulated using Ordinary Least Square technique. Data for timber and logs export were obtained from Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Bank of Tanzania (BOT), National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD), International trade Center (ITC) and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism (MNRT). Other information concerning infrastructural costs was obtained from timber and logs traders from Dar es Salaam, Mufindi, Lindi, Arusha and Tanga. The research identified many factors which have positive impact to export of forestry products in Tanzania. These are forestry products' price in the world market, Export of raw timber and logs, infrastructural costs associated with timber trade, and vector of other real variables that influence the supply of exports such as tariff and non-tariff barriers. The study identified the importance of trade as a major influence molding the shape of the forest-based sector of Tanzania, the nature and magnitude of trade barriers affecting the exportation of forestry products, the efforts undertaken in the past - and planned for the future - aimed at reducing trade barriers and the policy measures which both Tanzanian Government and the importing countries could consider adopting in order to reduce the impact of protectionism.
