Assessment of effects of retention strategies in private secondary schools in Dar es Salaam Tanzania: a case of St. Matthew’s Secondary School
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2012) Abel, Paul
The study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of retention strategies in private secondary school, a case of St. Matthew’s secondary school in Temeke, Dar es Salaam Tanzania. Specific objectives of the study were to investigate the types of retention strategies offered by the organization, to assess teachers’ attitudes towards retention strategies offered by the organization and to assess if the organization follows employee needs in motivating its employees. The study was purely qualitative. The data were collected through documentary review, questionnaires, interviews and observation using 100 respondents from St. Matthew’s secondary school and data was analyzed using SPSS using descriptive statistics as a tool of analysis. The findings revealed that retention strategies employed by the school management were not effective because the management satisfy the high-level needs instead of the lower level needs. The key findings from the study indicated different retention strategies used by St.Matthew’s secondary school management. In addition, the most important variables that make Employees quit the organization were identified. The study results showed that there is great labour turnover in the organization which implies that the retention strategies employed by the school are not effective in retaining employees (teachers). Failure of the retention strategies to retain talented employees has led to increased rate of teachers running the school. The study results suggested that the private school owners should create good working environment, employ well trained school administrators, revise on the salary scale and improve teachers retention strategies to improve school performance.
