(University of Dar es Salaam, 2016) Abeid, Khadija
The study focused on factors influencing persistence of poor performance in English language subject in secondary schools. The focal area of the study involves four public secondary schools in Dar es Salaam region. The objectives of the study were to examine the factors that contribute to persistence of poor performance of students in English language subjects and to examine mechanism employed by school in improving performance in English language subject. The study was mainly qualitative (with some elements of quantitative approaches) and involved a sample size of 101 respondents including heads of schools, students, English language subject teachers, academic teachers, and the schools, inspector. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaire, focus group discussion and documentary review where data collected from documentary review, interviews and focus groups discussion were analyzed through the using thematic data analysis procedure, while data collected from from questionnaire were classified, tallied and computed into frequencies and percentages using calculations. The findings revealed that persistence of poor performance in English language subject among secondary school students was caused by incompetent of English language teachers, inadequate learning and teaching resources, students and teacher attitudes. The findings also indicated that low commitment and work habit among teachers and students’ laziness affected the performance of English language subject. Consequently, the study found that, speaking English language regularly among students, increasing lessons per week, increasing English language subject textbooks and increasing assignments were the mechanisms that could help to improve performance in English language subject. Based on the research findings, the study concludes that so long as the factors persist more creative mechanisms are needed. The study also recommends that there should be deliberate efforts from the schools to solve the problem of poor performance in English language subject
