A comparative study between pilot and non-pilot schools in the teaching and learning of French in Dar es Salaam schools
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2001) Abedi, Mwanahamisi
The study aimed at comparing the teaching and learning process of French between the pilot and the non-pilot schools. It also aimed at comparing the performance between these two categories of schools and see if the teaching materials and the teaching methods had any influence in the performance. The study had three questions that h been the source of data collection and analysis. The study was based on six secondary schools where three being the pilot schools and the remaining three schools as the non-pilot schools all situated in Dar es Salaam. For main methods of data collection: interview, questionnaire, observation and documentary review were used from three main categories of the population sample: 159 students, 2 teachers and 1 Co-ordinator. The study revealed that there was a serious problem with teaching materials in the secondary schools under the study although all the relevant institutions are found in Dar es Salaam. However, whenever materials were used properly, there was full participation of the students in the use of the language especially in the pilot schools. In non-pilot schools, shortage of teaching materials and other facilities made the teacher work difficult. In the light of the findings and conclusion, several recommendations were advanced among them being the need for a clearer language policy in which French will be treated in the same way as English. The Ministry of Education and Culture should consistenly monitor and support French teaching in all schools but, especially in the pilot schools. There was also the need to restructure the current French syllabus and the examination format to incorporate communication activities. Also all available facilities should be appropriately used and updated from time to time and the schools should provide conducive learning environments by establishing extra curricular activities, like clubs.
