Assessment of community participation in ward secondary school science laboratory projects: a case of Tanga city council
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2016) Abdul, Hassan I
The purpose of this study was to assess community participation in ward secondary school science laboratory projects in Tanzania. Three objectives guided the study that were to examine community involvement in science laboratory projects in Tanga City Council, to examine the mode of resource mobility for science laboratory projects in Tanga City Council, to evaluate intervention measures for community participation in science laboratory projects in Tanga City Council. The study used both qualitative and quantitative approaches to a population of Tanga City Council with s sample size of 108. Questionnaires and interviews have been used as data collection tools and data analysis was done through a special programme known as Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). Findings revealed that the government is the one established school science laboratory projects in Tanga City Council as the government was eager to increase the quality and performance of science subjects. The community knows nothing about funds that has been contributed by the government for ward secondary school science laboratory construction. It is recommended that the government should be well prepared in terms of funds as there was no sufficient budget from the government for science laboratory construction hence depended on community contributions which were also insufficient for accomplishment of the projects within the set period of time. The school committees should be strengthened in order to enable ward secondary school laboratory stakeholders including youths and influence them in decision making through facilitating meaningful participation.
