    Impact of tourism sector on education in Zanzibar

    This study aimed at determining the impact of tourism sector on education in Zanzibar. The study drew two research objectives: (i) to investigate the impact brought by the tourism sector to education; and (ii) to establish ways to solve problems brought by tourism sector to education in Zanzibar. The study employed qualitative data. The relevant data were collected in Urban West, South and North regions of Zanzibar. The simple random sampling, purposeful and convenience sampling techniques were adopted. 89 participants, including pupils, teachers, and heads of schools, parents, local government administrators, Regional Education Officers, and ZTC officers were involved in the study. Interviews, Focus Discussion, field observation, and document search were used to collect data. The qualitative descriptive analysis of data was applied. The findings revealed that the tourism sector had sound contributions to local school education. The contributions were in the form of sponsoring of educational projects, provision of teaching-learning aids to teachers and students, supplying volunteer teachers, and improving students’ parents’ income for supporting schooling to the local children. On the other hand, the findings revealed that tourism was a source of negative consequences to schools. It contributed to deterioration of students’ moral problems, including unaccepted behaviours to students, child labour and school/Madrasa truancy and absenteeism of children. The findings revealed that as a result the local communities and school administration adopted different ways to minimize the problems, including use of punishment to students who misbehaved, holding meetings with tourism stakeholders and parents to discuss and find ways to solve the problems. The study concluded that despite of the positive impacts of tourism sector on school education there are strong negative consequences that tourism sector brought to educational sector. Furthermore the ways applied to solve the problems bought by tourism sector to education seem to be not well effective because the problems still existing. The study recommends that there should be identified zones between tourism sites and local people site. These will help to minimize the frequently interactions between tourists and local children/students. Additionally the study recommends on conducting further study on Tanzania Mainland for generalization and involving large area and sample.
