Item The late pleistocene terraces in the coastal basin of Pangani and their implications on sea level variations(University of Dar es Salaam, 2017) Abdallah, Edista AlexPleistocene to Holocene marine terraces, raised beaches and ridges were investigated in this study. The study was conducted through insitu observation and measurement of terraces outcrop with the aim ofunderstanding Pleistocene marine terraces of the eastern coast of Tanzania and their implications on sea level variations.Geological and lithological documentation of Pleistocene deposits from northeast coast in PanganiDistrict(Handeruterrace)records a height of 92 – 95 m above present sea level. The elevation of Handeru terrace to the present level was linked to the tectonic movements in the EARS leading to the periodic uplift that occurred extensively along the coast. Comparison with the marine terraces along the Tanzania coast between Dar es Salaam andPangani suggests Handeru terrace resulted from an extension of Sakura terrace which was reported to reach a height of 65 – 78 m above sea levels. Based on the terrace height and the borrowed date of 44.0 14C ka BP,Handeru terraces gaveanuplift rate of 2.0 – 2.2 mm/yr. It was concluded that at 44.0 14C ka BP the eustatic sea level was 60-90 m below present sea leveland therefore marine terraces at the coast of Tanzania are related to tectonic uplift.
