Specifically, the study sought to: assess the extent to which pre-primary school teachers use music as a medium of instruction in teaching pre-primary children; examine the effects of pre-primary school teachers’ training on the use of music in teaching and learning process; assess the effects of pre-primary school teachers’ teaching experience on the use music as a medium of instruction and; examine pre-primary school teachers’ attitudes towards music in the choice and use of music as a medium of instruction. The study employed mixed research approaches involving descriptive survey research design. The study was conducted in 8 pre-primary schools selected from Kinondoni municipality. It included a sample of 38 teachers. The instruments of data collection were questionnaires, observation and interviews. The study findings revealed most of the pre-primary school teachers used music as a medium of instruction in teaching and learning process. It was also found that pre-primary school teachers with training and long experience use music as a medium of instruction in teaching and learning process more often compared to those who did not learn how to use music as a medium of instruction and also had less experience. The long experienced teachers had spent more time with young children and also had attended several seminars and workshops, hence had gained enough skills to integrate music in teaching pre-primary school children. The study findings revealed that pre-primary teachers had positive perceptions towards the use of music as medium of instruction. It was concluded that, the use of music as a medium of instruction in pre-primary schools is mainly influenced by teachers training, experience and teachers’ perceptions. The study recommends that the government through the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training should train music teachers as well as provide funds for music education equipment and facilities. Additionally, the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) in collaboration with other stakeholders should develop enough music teaching and learning resources for pre-primary school children in Tanzania.
