    Vulnerability of rural livelihoods to multiple stressors in Kilombero valley, Tanzania

    Regardless of climate change, natural resources and livelihoods of Kilombero dwellers are more vulnerable as impacted by other multiple non-climatic stresses. The intention of this study was to evaluate multiple stresses influencing livelihood vulnerability while chopping the resources valuable for adaptation process. The study was conducted in Kilombero District involving tools such as household survey, Likert scaling, key informant interviews, Focus group discussion, and direct field observations to obtain primary information from the specifically selected Mofu and Signali villages. Results show that, vulnerability and adaptation vary with time, assets and type of income generating activity of a particular household. There are various socio-economic, political, technological and healthy stresses affecting productivity and income generation among most of Kilombero dwellers. Population growth and politics boost conflicts over limited wetland resources useful for attaining household livelihoods. Gender issues are intertwined with vulnerability and adaptation since impacts of multiple stressors felt differently to men and women. The conclusion from this study is that, livelihood vulnerability is not a function solitary factor but it is a product of multiple stresses. Thus, adaptation and coping from livelihood vulnerability requires careful consideration of various knotted stresses. Conflicts resolution and natural resource management will enhance sustainability to livelihoods of wetland communities.
