Item Internet access and use among students and tutors: a case old Marangu and Mandaka Teachers' colleges.(University of Dar es Salaam, 2013) Chirwa, Mussa NdambileThis study investigated the access and use of the Internet among tutors and student-teachers in public teachers’ colleges using Marangu and Mandaka as case studies. The main focus of the study was to finding out the access and extent to which tutors and student-teachers used the Internet for academic purposes. The study also sought to identify challenges and suggest remedies for effective use of Internet in the teaching and learning processes in teacher colleges. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative research methods. In this mixed method study, data were collected through the use of semi-structured interviews, observation and questionnaires. A sample of 99 respondents made up of 80 student-teachers, 16 tutors, one principal and two ICT coordinators took part in the study. Statistical Product and Services Solution (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel were used to analyse and present mainly quantifiable data. Qualitative information, on the other hand, was subjected to content analysis. The study established that students’ level of access and use, particularly for academic purposes was not satisfactory, due to inadequacy of computers connected to the Internet, time constraints, lack of awareness as well as lack of Internet use skills. The level of access for tutors was found to be good; however their use of the Internet for academic purposes was not satisfactory due to factors similar to those experienced by students. It is therefore, recommended that the parent ministry in co-operation with college principals should improve Internet access and use in TTCs by resolving the issues currently limiting the use of the Internet for academic purposes among students and tutors.
