Item Freedom of expression and freedom of the media in Tanzania: the efficacy of stakeholder’s media bill proposals in promoting freedom of the print media(University of Dar es Slaam, 2010) Bakari, GeorgeThe study examines the efficacy of the stakeholders’ media bill proposals in Tanzania in promoting freedom of expression through the print media. Chapter one gives the general introduction. It offers the meaning and discusses the genesis of the concept of freedom of expression, statement of the problem, methodologies, significance of the study and literature review. Chapter Two offers the historical accounts of print media and evolution of the print media laws in Tanzania. The chapter gives an insight on the operation of the print media and its concomitant laws and mounts a discussion on whether they promoted or stifled media freedom of expression through the print media. Chapter Three shows the correlation between freedom of the media and freedom of expression. The chapter also elaborates on the legal and non legal factors which limit freedom of the media through surveying different current laws and current operation of the print media industry. Chapter Four of the study embarks on examining the efficacy of the stakeholders’ media bill proposals. The chapter discusses provisions of each bill separately and measures the same against international standards and best practices and offer analysis whether they promotes or stifles freedom of expression through the print media. Chapter Five gives conclusion and recommendations. It sums up the entire study and gives the general conclusion and more respective recommendations to the respective audiences particularly the government, editors, journalists and media stakeholders on how to promote freedom of expression through the print media.
