Item The effect of flux distribution on losses in single phase induction motors(Unversity of Dar es Salaam, 2007) Abel, Anyigulile H.The single phase induction motor is the main electric drive in domestic electrical appliances, agricultural equipment and is smallworkshops. Due to its simplicity, it finds applications for some supplementary functions even in areas where a three phase supply is available. The main drawback of the motor however, it its [poor efficiency us compared to nits three phase counterpart. This has been attributing to its pulsating magnetic flux and flux harmonies that result due to the non-sinusoidal distribution of the stator winding and non-uniform and also non linear magnetic permeance. In this work the effect of the air gap flux distribution (as cause by the distribution of the stator winding) on the losses of a single phase induction motor has been investigated. Motor models have been used to simulate a number of stator winding distributions. A finite Element method has been used for work. This method has been preferred due to its capacity to take into account the non-linearity of the problems as it takes into account the non-linearity of the problems as it takes into account the behaviour of the fields from element to element over the entire field interest. The simulation results have been found to agree with the corresponding measured values in the chosen range of speed. The outcome of the work has shown that a sinusoidally distributed winding, which results in lower flux harmonics, has got no merit as far as the total motor losses are concerned. In fact for the motors investigated a less sinusoidally distributed winding is better off.
