Item Identification of an appropriate method of solid waste management in three markets in zanzibar: a case study of darajani, mwanakwerekwe and mikunguni markets(University of Dar es Salaam, 2012) Abdulrasoul, Awattif AboudThis study identified and assessed the current situation of solid waste generated in the three main markets (Mwanakwerekwe, Darajani and Mikunguni) of Zanzibar municipality. The study aimed at identifying an appropriate method for managing the solid waste from these markets and the like. The study was conducted using questionnaires, interviews, direct observations and field experiments. The field results showed that the daily solid waste generated at Mwanakwerekwe, Darajani and Mikunguni were 9,664 kg/day, 4,272 kg/day and 600 kg/day, respectively. The analysis of the waste collected from the three markets revealed that organic composition of waste produced at Mwanakwerekwe, Darajani and Mikunguni markets were 86.1 %, 84.8 % and 83.7 %, respectively, making average organic waste of 85.7 %.The study also identified several shortcomings in connection with market solid waste management, including lack of storage facilities. Appropriate methods have been recommended to improve the situation. These include the provision of adequate dustbins and skips, increasing the frequency of collections, increasing public awareness, separation of waste between biodegradable and non-biodegradable, involvement of the private sector and the use of compost for market organic waste.
