Item Evaluation of performance of passenger road transport companies in Tanzania: the case of Dar es Salaam City(University of Dar es Salaam, 2010) Abbas, Hozza AthumanTransport industry is one of the social facilities which are provided with the aim of improving social welfare. However providing equitable and efficient Passengers transport services for the ever increasing demand with the limited resources available is a challenge in the developing country. Performance evaluation refers to a process of monitoring and analysis to determine how well organizations perform with regard to their intended goals and objectives. This provides useful guidance for planning and management decisions. Thus, the need to evaluate the performance of the current transport industry efficiency to identify opportunities and deficiencies as the cost of maintaining, expanding and extending passengers transport services is very high and mostly unaffordable for developing countries. In transport industry, performance evaluation measures can be used to monitor resources and service distributions, identify deficiencies and opportunities. This study utilized both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. Data were collected through questionnaires with a total of 80 respondents. Data involved in this research included, factors and problems hindering performance of passenger road transport companies in Tanzania Dar –es – Salaam: infrastructures as well as availability of resources used in passenger transport companies and lastly, quality of service provided by passenger transport companies in Tanzania. Moreover, ten interviews, and physical observations were conducted during the time of research and some photo graphs were taken showing the real situation of transport industry. Results revealed that there were many problems affecting performance of passenger transport industry including management, maintenance, financial policies and transport policies. Infrastructures were not well developed and costs for resources in transport industry were very high. Also the quality of service for some companies was unsatisfactory. This study recommends to have competent and effective transport managers who have effective management skills. In addition, the study recommends application of performance indicators to passenger transport companies and also a further study should be conducted so as to evaluate performance of passenger road transport companies.
